FTC sends checks to people who paid for mortgage relief

The FTC is sending 198 checks totaling more than $49,000 to people who lost money to a mortgage relief scheme that used the names HOPE Services and HouseHoldRelief.

According to the FTC, the companies told people to call the “Homeowner’s HOPE Hotline†to avoid foreclosure and get help with their mortgages. The companies pretended to be working with government mortgage relief programs or “higher ups†at lenders and then stole monthly mortgage payments from their customers.

The FTC sued the companies and a federal court found that the defendants broke the law and ordered them to pay money. The FTC is now using recovered money to help affected homeowners.

If you get a check, please cash it within 90 days.
