FTC sends refunds to people who bought health insurance plans
The FTC is sending payments totaling nearly $100 million to 463,629 people who paid Benefytt, a healthcare company that used names like MyBenefitsKeeper and AgileHealthInsurance.
The FTC sued Benefytt and its third-party partners, and the defendants settled. According to the lawsuit, Benefytt lied about their sham health insurance plans and used deceptive websites to sell products and services that cost as much as hundreds of dollars per month but often left customers unprotected in medical emergencies. The plans were not qualified under the Affordable Care Act and lacked key elements. The lawsuit also alleged that Benefytt tacked on add-ons, like life or accident insurance, and made it hard for customers to cancel.
As a result of the lawsuit, the defendants paid money to provide refunds and are banned from lying about their products or charging illegal junk fees.
