FTC sends payments to people who bought clothing accessories
The FTC is sending 4,061 payments totaling more than $143,000 to people who bought products from Chaucer/Bates Accessories. These companies sold products under the brand names Chaucer Accessories, Chaucer Leather, Bates Accessories, Thomas Bates, TB Phelps, David Spencer Shoes, Custom Brand Footwear, and Bates Retail Group.
According to the FTC, Chaucer/Bates Accessories falsely claimed shoes, belts, and other products they sold were “Made in USA†or “Hand Crafted in USA.â€. In reality, a number of their products were wholly imported or used significant imported materials.
To settle the FTC’s charges, Chaucer/Bates Accessories agreed to pay money to provide refunds to customers and stop making misleading “Made in USA†claims.
