FTC Sends Additional Refunds to People Charged by I Works
The FTC is sending a second round of payments totaling more than $8 million to 59,187 people who were lured by the bogus government-grant and money-making schemes promoted by I Works.
The FTC sued I Works for false advertising and for billing customers without their consent. The company ran multiple online campaigns that falsely advertised that federal grants were generally available for personal use and that people could make a lot of money using I Works products. When people gave their credit or debit card numbers to pay a small shipping and handling fee, I Works charged them a one-time fee of up to $129.95, followed by monthly fees of up to $59.95, without their consent.
The FTC first sent payments in this matter in May 2020, which resulted in more than $8.4 million in refunds. Because the FTC recovered additional money from the defendants, the agency is sending a second round of payments.
