FTC sends refunds to people who paid for student loan debt relief
The FTC is sending payments totaling more than $4.1 million to 27,584 people who lost money to a student loan debt relief scheme that used many names including Mission Hills Â鶹´«Ã½, Â鶹´«Ã½ Direct Group, National Secure Processing, and The Student Loan Group.
The FTC sued these companies and won. According to the lawsuit, these companies charged illegal upfront fees and falsely promised to lower or wipe out student loan payments. Despite their promises, they did not use the money they collected from their customers to pay down student loan balances and did not get student loan balances forgiven.
As a result of the lawsuit, the defendants paid money to provide refunds and are banned from telemarketing and debt relief services.
