FTC sends refunds to people who lost money to a deceptive marketing scheme
The FTC is sending payments totaling over $1.1 million to 41,934 people who were charged by RevMountain LLC, a marketing company that promised low-cost trials for tooth whiteners and other products but charged expensive hidden fees.
In August 2017, the FTC sued RevMountain and related corporate defendants, alleging they used deceptive claims and confusing terms to trick people into providing their billing information and charge them for unwanted subscriptions. As a result, customers who believed they were buying a single trial product for about $5 were charged about $200 a month until they canceled the unwanted subscriptions. The defendants used a network of company names and websites in their scheme, including Smile Pro Direct, Bella Brite, Whitening Coach, Spark Whitening, Blizzard White, Hydra White, and First Class Whitening. The defendants agreed to a settlement and paid money to provide refunds.
