Â鶹´«Ã½ Trade Commission Chair Lina M. Khan issued the following statement regarding the death of former FTC Chairman Michael Pertschuk:

“We are deeply saddened by the death of former FTC Chair Michael Pertschuk. Mike led the FTC with a tireless dedication to protect the public. On behalf of the entire FTC community, I want to express our condolences and convey our gratitude for his many contributions.

“Mike was appointed Chair of the FTC by President Carter in 1977 and served in that role until 1981. He continued to serve as an FTC Commissioner through 1984. Mike led with a bold vision to effectively deploy the FTC’s enforcement toolkit and develop substantive rules. He bolstered the FTC’s capacity to conduct policy analysis and implementation. His initiatives recognized the importance of holding public convenings and undertaking new research on emerging topics in law and policy, key areas that we continue to build on today.

“Prior to serving in these roles, Mike helped steer the passage of major consumer protection and public health legislation as Staff Director and Chief Counsel of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. During his tenure, Congress passed the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which underpins several of our recent rulemaking initiatives, including those targeting impersonation scams, false earnings claims, and fake reviews. His fight for the American consumer was truly a lifelong endeavor.

“Mike’s willingness to think boldly and to forge new pathways will inspire generations. His relentless commitment to public service sets an example that we will continue to honor in the years ahead.â€
